Current Projects

1. Badagamuwa Forest (Kurunegala) Trash Cleanup Project (Scheduled for June 2013 - Exact date to be determined)

Rainforest Protectors volunteer Chathura Jayajeewa is organizing a trash cleanup (plastic, glass, metal) at Badagamuwa forest in Kurunegala in the coming weeks. Currently, this gem of a forest in the heart of Kurunegala is littered with non-biodegradable waste. We hope you can extend a helping hand to Chathura to successfully organize this project. If you are interested in joining, please email (RainforestProtectors@gmail.com) as soon as possible.

2. Rainforest Tree Planting Project (Location to be determined)

We have secured 2 sponsors for Tree Planting Project and we need a Volunteer Project Leader to coordinate the activities with the help of our members. Below are the major responsibilities for this person.

a. Find / Arrange suitable properties in the wet zone (Ratnapura, Galle, Kalutara, Matara) districts for tree planting. These can include estates, home gardens, parks etc.

b. Find / Arrange sourcing of plants through a suitable plant nursery. Please see the Rainforest Plant list below. For home gardens, fruit trees, Kos, Del etc, will also be suitable.

(Sponsor will cover cost of plants)

c. Communicate with Rainforest Protectors Executive members providing regular status updates. We will help with arranging transportation of the plants to the property, purchase of tools for planting and getting volunteers to participate in the tree planting.

This will be a on-going long term initiative of RPSL, but to start off, we are looking for a Volunteer Project Leader to kick off this project in a few properties with the goal of planting few hundred trees.

If you are interested in this challenging but rewarding opportunity, please contact us - RainforestProtectors@gmail.com

Ongoing Long Term Projects

1. Setup Rainforest Protectors Conservation Center (Rakwana, Kalawana, Hiniduma or Neluwa area)

Proposed conservation center will be on a bio-diverse land of 5 acres or larger. It will serve as the base for protecting flora and fauna of the nearby rainforest. It will have a visitors education center, rainforest plant nursary and trails for nature hikes. We are currently looking for sponsors to help us buy land and build the conservation center and individuals to help setup and manage it (full-time or part-time). Click here if you would like to help.

2. Rapid Action Team (RAT)

The volunteers of Rainforest Protectors act as a Rapid Action Team to respond to urgent threats faced by our forests and wildlife throughout the island, particularly our rainforest regions. Action is taken both on the field as well as through Media / Internet. Through regular visits to Sinharaja and Kanneliya Rainforests as well as other Rainforest patches, RAT will monitor the health of our rainforests. These include checking for illegal logging and encroachment, investigating poaching and cleaning up pollutants and trash. Authorities will be informed when necessary to take legal action.

3. Educating all Sri Lankans the need to protect our Rainforests

Through Internet/Facebook, organised nature hikes and community outreach programs, we raise conservation awareness among Sri Lankans related to bio-diversity, recycling and importance of protecting our Rainforests.

4. Conservation Partners

Conservation Partners are conservation minded individuals who would like to invest their extra money to purchase private land close to rainforest buffer / corridor areas with the intention of protecting nature while securing long term investment gain. Rainforest Protectors will maintain a periodically updated land bank. If the Conservation Partner need to sell their protected land, we will find a similar conservation minded individual to purchase the property, helping to keep the land in it's natural state for the long term.
